This was my grandfather (my Dad's father) & I knew him 'well'; he was at our house quite a bit when I was growing up; when I got married & had children, he was around much more often since he was living in a home for the aged in New Haven, CT. He spent most important occasions with us, baptisms, anniversaries, holidays, etc.
The things I remember most were Grandpa making crepes for us for breakfast, delicious!!! He hated his teeth when he got older so he just didn't bother to put them in. He loved to play setback, cribbage & many other card games, but you had to keep sharp so he wouldn't cheat you. Before he went to the home, he used to disappear for weeks/months on end & then someone would find him at one of his other children's homes or coming back from the racetrack somewhere. He didn't talk much, only could hear when he wanted to, laughed heartily when he was caught cheating at cards. I am glad I had the opportunity to know my grandfather since my other 3 grandparents all had died by the time I was 10 & I don't remember them much. I have one special picture of my son Philip on his baptism day with his father, my father & my grandfather, Henry.
