  • Name Jesse Peter Lozier
Born 16 Oct 1917  Fort Kent, Aroostook, ME Find all individuals with events at this location
    • Record of Birth from Maine State Archives shows his name as Joseph, born Oct. 16, 1917; his parents are Henry Lauzier & Modeste Levisque; he was their 5th child.
His name was amended on 9/29/82 to Jesse Peter Lozier & his father to Lozier; the record of birth shows #21000 dated 9/29/82; I asked the Maine Vital Records office to let me know who amended this; they at first told me it was his mother but that's impossible since she died in 1954; then they told me he changed it himself; I asked for a copy of this but they said that was confidential information.

    • 'Jessie' is listed on the 1920 US Census in Fort Kent, ME as 2 yrs. old.
His sister, Jerrie, told me that in 1921 her & Jesse were sent to live at a Catholic orphanage in No. Mills, VT with Irene & Juliet (Harvey was too young, stayed with parents & Rocky was in a sanitorium in Maine for TB at 4 yrs. old) for about 2-2-1/2 yrs. while Gram & Gramp worked in the lumber camps; he cooked & she helped. Then they moved to Berlin, NH & they went to a catholic school. They moved to Forestville, CT in 1929 & they went to Green Hill School.
He had a serious sledding accident on Lincoln Ave., Forestville, CT, (about 1929), hit by car, in hospital (Bristol) for 3 weeks (about 9 yrs. old). (per Jerrie Watters, his sister).

    • The Veteran's Affairs office in Bristol, CT sent me a copy of an index file they had on Dad from 'The Bristol War Historical Committe Record' showing his military service & awards. Shows that he was in 169th Inf., National Guard & Reg. Army, enlisted, entered Nov. 2, 1939 at 22 yrs. old, battles Guadalcanal- Northern Solomon; ribbons Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Campaign 2 battle stars, Combat Infantry Badge & American Defense Service Ribbon; discharged at Lovell Gen. Hospital on Sept. 23, 1944; he was a Corporal Grade V St/Sgt.
His daughter, Patricia, was born while he was overseas & he didn't get to see her until she was about 2-1/2 yrs. old.
Found a postcard sent from Jesse & Anna to Mr. & Mrs. H. Lozier (his parents) on Sept. 9, 1944 from Lovell General Hospital at Fort Devons, MA saying that the two girls (his wife & daughter Patricia, I assume) were with him & he didn't think he would be home by Monday as planned; the card was dated Sept. 9, 1944, the next Monday would have been Sept. 11th; he wasn't discharged until Sept. 23, 1944. The postcard had a 1 cent stamp on it.

    • My dad was cremated & I held his urn for over 7-1/2 yrs. & then contacted the VA to see if he could be buried with his comrades in the VA cemetery; they approved of the burial in the CT Veteran's Cemetery in Middletown CT & we set the date for his birthdate of Oct 16 in the year 2007. He was the only gravesite in the new section they had opened that day, it was very lonesome looking.
On Oct. 16, 2007 (his birthdate) we had his ashes buried in the Ct. Veteran's Cemetery in Middletown, CT with Military Honors; he is in location 20A14, on the left in the open field as you enter the cemetery. My sister & son came to CT for the ceremony.
I went back on Apr. 15, 2008 (the anniversary of his death), 6 mos. after he was buried there and took pictures of the headstone the VA had made for him; CIB = Combat Infantryman Badge, he was lonesome no more, the whole section had begun to fill in with new burials & gravesites.

    Notes
    • On July 4, 1941 Jesse married Anna Marie Messina in East Haven, CT
My Dad had a myriad of jobs during his lifetime, never quite struck it rich; was a prolific writer, he used to have me read all his draft novels when I was in my teens, they were 'Mickey Spillane' type stories & I loved them but he never published anything. He wrote poetry in his later years & finally got a poem published after paying a lot of money for 3 copies of the book with his poem in it. About 2 years before he died, I collected all his poems & had small booklets made up as a surprise to him & gave him about 20 books to distribute to his family & friends as he saw fit; it was one of the greatest moments of his life.
What else can I say about my Dad; him & I were buddies. I went everywhere with him; I tried to walk like him, talk like him, wore his clothes in my teens (he was a small guy & I was small at that time also); I wore his bowling shoes for years when I was on my first league. I loved my Dad, we had an exceptional relationship; we argued, we talked about all kinds of things, we played cards furiously, we laughed together all the time. When he got cancer & was going for his chemo treatments, the entire group there thought we were crazy because we always had such a good time together. I miss him dearly & wish he could have shared in this genealogy with me, since his initial work is what got me started on this track to begin with. He would be amazed at what information is available today online & at the repositories I've visited. I am my father's daughter!
